All about melon

Beauty queen and melon party in Vilafranca de Bonany.

Did you know that Mallorca has especially tasty melons? There are honeydew melons, dark green, striped, seedless water melons and galia melons – all of them ideal for cooling down in summer with low calories. At the moment, they are extremely tasty, sweet and available from less than 0,50 € per kilo. But take care: water melons from Mallorca are huge – they might weight up to 30 kg.

Melons from Mallorca are cultivated in the center of the island where temperatures reach more than 40° C in summer. It´s the area of the village Vilafranca de Bonany where tasty water melons, gala melons and honey melons are cultivated and brought to the supermarkets just in time. So, they are the most delicious melons you can find, just absolutely mature and sweet. No comparison to mainland melons which are supposed for export.

Local water melons are not only extremely tasty. They are true fat burner. The amino acid citrulline, which is contained in watermelon helps to burn excess fat and regulate cholesterol levels. Even for a summer diet watermelon is perfect, because the fruit is low in calories (100 grams of watermelon have just 24 calories), stimulates metabolism, helps build muscle and fills the stomach.

Watermelon is 90% of water, and along with the Vitamin C it protects the skin from drying out and strengthens the connective tissue.

Even as anti-aging agent the watermelon may serve. It is full of anti-oxidants and vitamins A, C and lycopene that fight visible signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and enlarged pores.

Don´t miss to see the biggest melons of Mallorca and their proud farmers at the melon festival in Vilafranca de Bonany, taking place the first weekend of September. Beside a competition for the biggest melon there is live music and a farmers market.
