Olive oil: the island´s gold

They are called “Arbequina“, “Mallorquina”, “Empeltre” and “Picual”.  Their flavour ranges from sweet to fruity or slightly bitter and some even taste like almonds.  We are talking about Majorca´s olives and the wonderful olive oil made from the fine fruit of the olive tree.

You cannot imagine Majorca without its olive trees, formed from hundreds of years of exposure to wind and weather.  Majorcan cuisine would be unthinkable without olive oil and good restaurants in Majorca cannot do without this precious oil.  Discover this island secret for yourself!

The island has one of the longest traditions of producing olive oil in the Mediterranean.  As usual, it all started with the Phoenicians because they brought the Olea europaea to the Iberian Peninsula and to the Balearics.  Afterwards, the Arabs intensified the cultivation of olives.  Already in the 13th century Majorcan olive oil was renowned throughout the entire Mediterranean and Port de Sóller was one of the most important harbours for olive oil exports to Southern France.  Even the Austrian Archduke Ludwig Salvator, who lived in Majorca in the 19th century, raved about the island´s oil and recommended dressing salads and dipping bread in it.  Until today people have kept up this tradition and in 2002 the oil became protected under the certificate of origin (D.O.) Oli de Mallorca.  This guarantees that the olives have been cultivated and the oil produced on the island.  The result is an olive oil which, if cold pressed, may be awarded the seal of quality, “extra virgin olive oil”.  This means that the oil is pure and has been neither refined nor enriched with additives.  Thanks to this gentle, vitamin-preserving processing, the oil contains a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids which, among other properties, reduce cholesterol.  The Oli afruitat is prepared from the first crop and is of yellowish-green colour.  It has a bitter, slightly spicy flavour.  The ‘sweet’ oil oli dolç is obtained from the ripe olives, is slightly yellowish and its mild aroma is full of flavour.  Whether oil or pure olives, marinated with herbs or sea fennel or stuffed with almonds or garlic – gourmets appreciate these island treasures.

Recommended olive oil manufacturers on the island are Macià Batle, Treurer, Oli des Mirant, Solivellas, Son Catiu, Es Raiguer, Son Quint, Caimari, the Cooperativa Agrícola de Sóller and Can Det.  However there are at least a dozen other cold pressed olive oils made from the little Majorcan olives that can be ordered off the Internet from “Der Mallorquiner” or “Fet a Sóller” and even sent to your home country.

Mallorquíssimo introduces you to the island´s products which you can find using your smartphone or tablet!
